You’ve probably heard rumours about root canals. Likely, you think they involve pain and a complex dental procedure. In reality, our patients often fall asleep during their root canal therapy because they feel so comfortable!

What Is a Root Canal?

If you need root canal therapy, there is an infection that has penetrated the nerve of your tooth. Typically, you’ll experience discomfort. To relieve the pressure and clean out the infection, a root canal procedure is necessary. The process involves having the infection cleaned out and the root canal sealed off.

To wrap up the procedure, we’ll place a dental crown on the tooth weakened by the infection. This step is necessary to be sure your tooth stays strong and functional.

What to Expect During a Root Canal

We’ll perform an evaluation that includes taking X-rays. On your X-rays, you can usually see traces of the infection in your tooth. We’ll isolate the infected tooth with a rubber dam to make sure the infection doesn’t come into contact with your saliva, gums and other teeth. You’ll receive a numbing agent so that you don’t feel anything. You can put on a pair of headphones and listen to the music of your choice while we work.

Our dentist will take his time to remove all traces of the infection from your tooth, typically taking place over three sessions. Then, the tooth will be filled and sealed off so that the infection is less likely to recur. After your root canal procedure is complete, you can have a crown placed on the tooth to prevent it from cracking or breaking.

Every step of your root canal will be fully explained to you before getting started. We’ll answer all of your questions so that you can proceed, feeling informed about your procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need root canal treatment?

If tooth pulp becomes extremely inflamed or infected as a result of decay, for example, the tissue will need to be removed to preserve the tooth and stop the infection from spreading. As an adult, you don’t need the pulp – its primary use is to aid in tooth development during childhood.

Is there an alternative?

Yes, you could elect to have your tooth extracted. However, it’s always best to try to save it – particularly since root canal treatment has a high success rate of over 90%. Preserving the tooth can prevent other problems from occurring at a later time. These issues include bite problems from teeth shifting, difficulty chewing, and loss of jawbone volume and density.

Is root canal treatment painful?

No, root canal treatment today is much more comfortable than it was in the past. The procedure typically causes no more discomfort that a filling would. Though root canal treatment has a bad reputation, it shouldn’t. That’s because the disease, not the cure, is to blame. The infection that makes the treatment necessary is often painful because it inflames tissue that has many nerves and therefore is highly sensitive. Root canal treatment relieves this pain.
